Many students read the words of a story but have difficulty comprehending that story. These readers struggle to visualize images. As they read, they do not imagine what the characters in the story look like, nor do they visualize the action which occurs in the story. But the results of poor reading comprehension do not end with reading.
Conversation can also be difficult for those with reading comprehension difficulties. This is a perfect example of the phrase “You let everything go in one ear and out the other.” Discussions can be hard to follow. Those affected may ask and re-ask the same question because they do not listen closely enough.
Poor reading comprehension can also weaken writing skills. Thoughts may be fragmented without clear focus on a main theme. Events are frequently written out of sequence.
A great reader creates a series of pictures in his mind as he reads. These then join to become a full-length movie. This is the basis of strong reading comprehension.
