The college entrance exam, known as the SAT, was redesigned in 2005.  This redesign adds a third division to the test that includes writing skills.

The three divisions of the SAT now include one section for writing skills, one section for math and one section for critical reading.  Each of these sections has a total point value of 800 points.

The examination is further broken down into 10 subsections.  Each of these sections takes approximately 20 – 25 minutes.  Total examination time is 3 hours and 45 minutes.  The students are permitted brief break periods, so the time spent at the examination center is approximately 4 hours 15 minutes.

For students to maximize their scores, they must prepare for the exam with a multi-faceted approach.

First, they must familiarize themselves with the test.  Students should take multiple, full length “mock” exams to learn what to expect from each section.  They should learn exactly what the directions are asking for, how many questions are in each section, and how to pace themselves in each section.

Students then should learn how the point scoring affects their total performance.  The SAT awards one point for each correct answer and zero points for questions left blank.  This is similar to what students encounter in their high school exams.  The big difference is that the SAT deducts ¼ of a point for each incorrect answer.  Learning how this affects the final score is paramount to achieving a premier score.

Students must also master the most significant math formulas, grammatical rules and writing strategies in preparation for this exam.

The SAT is offered almost every month from October through June.  The schedule can be accessed at www.collegeboard.com .
